Library Student Worker

Position Overview

Student workers are employed on a temporary, contractual basis and the hours will depend upon the current needs of the college. This position is open to current, full-time students who have completed a minimum of one semester at Alexander College. The position may require travel between campuses.

While a student worker’s duties and responsibilities are determined day to day, there are many core tasks associated with the role.

Education & Experience Requirements

International students are welcome to apply for this on-campus position. In accordance with Citizen and Immigration Canada, students who want to work on-campus do not need a work permit, but do need to meet these basic requirements:

  • Current enrollment in at least the second term of full-time studies at Alexander College
  • Have a valid study permit for the entirety of the current term
  • Maintain at least 80% attendance in all courses

Duties

Under the direct supervision and guidance of Alexander College staff, student workers assist with general duties on campus, according to a schedule. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Checking in and checking out books
  • Maintaining a clean and safe library space (e.g., tidy chairs and tables, clean study rooms, ensure paper is stocked for printers, supplies available, etc.)
  • Shelve library materials in Library of Congress Classification order
  • Assisting with general library questions (e.g., how to book study rooms, how to place a hold on a book) as well as technical help for printing, photocopying, and other IT related inquiries via phone and in-person interactions
  • Assisting users with finding items if needed
  • Referring users to other AC departments if needed
  • Referring users to Library Technicians and Librarians for research questions
  • Informing users of Library policies (e.g., no food, etc.)
  • Other projects as required (e.g. book displays, library blog post topics)

Additional Information

Successful candidates will possess the ability to:

  • Communicate well with others
  • Listen to directions carefully and complete tasks accurately
  • Finish assigned duties in a reasonable amount of time, under minimal supervision
