What is Diwali?

Diwali is one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism culture. Diwali lasts for 5 days, “from the 13th day of the dark half of the lunar month Ashvina to the second day of the light half of the lunar month Karttika” (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2021) which usually occurs in late October and November. This year, Diwali is celebrated on November 4, 2021. The name “Diwali” means “row of lights” which comes from the term dipavali in Sanskrit, and the festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2021).
