Welcome to AC Library’s virtual sightseeing tour! In this series, the Library will take you to different local sites of interest. We’ll explore these sites using the online resources available to all students and faculty through the Library databases, along with other accessible virtual resources. Join us this week as we explore the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra:
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1919 as a non-profit organization, and has now become the third largest symphony orchestra in Canada, and the largest outside of Ontario. The symphony sees an annual attendance of 250,000 people over the 150 concerts that are held throughout the year. The orchestra performs all throughout Metro Vancouver, from the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver to the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey as well as many other theatres in the lower mainland.

The orchestra also endeavors to create opportunities to advocate for musical education. Their efforts to support early education include conducting 12 concerts each year that are open to elementary school students and are attended by almost 500 participating schools. The VSO also offers special interactions for a wide array of students including the Tiny Tots concerts for infants and children, as well as giving music students across the world the opportunity to study with members of the VSO. For more educational opportunities with the VSO, as well as to view the theatres that they perform at, you can view their online listings here.
If you are missing some musical content in your life right now, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is creating digital performances from the homes of their performers that can be enjoyed online for free. Information on the digital performances can be found here. You can also check out the orchestra’s YouTube page for some pre-recorded performances, such as this one, where they perform Beethoven’s 5th Symphony to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.
