Student Life Officer

Position Overview

The Student Life Officer works to provide a holistic approach to identifying and addressing student needs on and off campus. The Student Life Officer (SLO), under the supervision of the Director of Student Support provides direction to the Alexander College Student Association and works to enhance student communications. The SLO works to ensure a positive culture of inclusivity and connection with all students and, where required, advocates for them. The nature of the position requires the ideal candidate to possess a passion for working with students in a post-secondary context and a strong understanding of the dynamics of an international student environment.

Salary Range

$50,000 per year

Working Hours

The Student Life Officer is expected to work during regular business hours as well as on evenings and weekends to attend events at times as required, for 37.5 hours per week. Occasional overtime may be required.

Location(s)

  • Burnaby and Vancouver campuses
  • Various locations within the lower mainland for student clubs and events purposes

Education & Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma required
  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred) or some education at the postsecondary level
  • Minimum of 1 year of work experience in a promotional or marketing role, preferably within an educational setting

  • Strong proficiency in English
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong ability to take initiative and complete tasks as assigned
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Excellent time-management skills
  • Can initiate tasks/projects confidently and competently
  • Strong ability to communicate easily and fluidly through technology and social media
  • Works well both independently and in high-performance teams
  • Demonstrated leadership and public speaking abilities

Responsibilities

Assist with Administrative Functions of the Student Life Unit
  • Attend regular meetings for the Student Life Unit
  • Collaborate with other staff members in the Student Support Unit and other departments as needed; participate in regular Student Support team meetings
  • Gather and present data to the Director of Student Support for term and annual reporting
Student Event Planning and Management
  • Coordinate and assist with the setup, preparation, and delivery of on- and off-campus Alexander College events
  • Plan, organize, and lead regular student activities, including multicultural, networking, and social events
  • Arrange bookings for both offsite and onsite events
  • Gather and analyze student feedback through surveys to improve future activities and events
  • Lead and manage major events such as Orientation, Convocation, workshops, and other Student Life initiatives
  • Promote college events by overseeing and supporting activities as assigned
  • Track, analyze, and report on data and outcomes related to all events
  • Actively participate in events as required, ensuring their success
Alexander College Student Association (ACSA) Support
  • Attend and facilitate weekly ACSA meetings
  • Organize and manage student elections, ensuring all processes are timely and transparent
  • Provide guidance and oversight for budgeting, meeting management, and event planning
  • Foster relationships with other institutions to connect ACSA with external student associations
  • Review and update ACSA policies and procedures as needed to maintain alignment with best practices
Student Club Planning and Management
  • Develop and support student and staff-led clubs in alignment with ACSA Charter guidelines
  • Identify potential student club leaders early in each term and provide training on procedures and policies
  • Assist clubs in planning events and activities that promote AC community
  • Continuously enhance and expand ACSA programs and club offerings throughout the academic year
Program Oversight
  • Oversee the Alumni Program, including outreach initiatives, data collection, and gathering testimonials to promote alumni engagement
  • Support the Athletics Program by coordinating events, promoting athletic activities, and enhancing student participation
  • Manage the Volunteering Program by connecting students with community service opportunities and encouraging a culture of giving back
  • Assist in organizing and conducting annual student focus groups to gather feedback on programs, services, and student needs
  • Analyze and report focus group data to the Director of Student Support
Other
  • Manage and supervise the scheduling and daily operations of the front desk staff within the Student Life unit
  • Pursue ongoing professional development related to Student Life and Student Support Services
  • Develop proposals to expand Student Life initiatives and improve student engagement
  • Prepare detailed reports and actively participate in college-wide initiatives led by the administration
  • Provide invigilation support for course examinations, maintaining scheduling flexibility during exam periods
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Student Support to support institutional goals
