Faculty Support Specialist (FSS)

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Instructional Support Centre Manager (ISCM), the Faculty Support Specialist will be responsible for supporting faculty and staff with issues arising from digital learning resources. The Specialist will also support the Instructional Support Centre Coordinator (ISCC) and the ISCM with other tasks as directed.

Salary Range

$46,000 – $50,000 per year

Work Week

This position requires the employee to work a flexible 37.5-hour work week to meet the needs of the position. Typical hours will be a 7.5-hour shift scheduled between 8am – 6pm, including a half-hour unpaid lunch break, for a 5-day work week between Monday to Saturday. Schedules will be based on the needs of the college and will typically be set at the start of each term. Temporary schedule adjustments may occur during the term. Overtime may be required to fulfill the needs of the support position.

Location

This position requires the employee to travel between, and work at, all Alexander College campuses, as well as offsite.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred) or some education at the postsecondary level
  • Minimum of one year’s related work experience
  • One year of teaching experience in post-secondary education considered an asset

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the learning management system (LMS) and other digital learning technologies
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and student service skills
  • Experience working with speakers of other languages
  • Flexible with a ‘team player’ attitude
  • Able to take initiative and address the needs of the unit
  • Able to take direction and complete tasks as assigned
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Strong proficiency in English

Specific Responsibilities

  • Providing individualized support and training to faculty on the use of instructional support technologies supported by Alexander College
    • Providing on-campus basic technical support with classroom technology, printers, and other technical resources located in the faculty areas.
    • Providing in-person or virtual support, training, or consultations to faculty on the use of the learning management system, other instructional technologies, and innovative teaching strategies.
    • Responding to emails from faculty.
    • Investigating issues encountered by faculty and (where appropriate) providing solutions or alternatives.
    • Direct faculty to the proper support services for assistance with issues not supported by the ISC.
    • Maintain accurate records of faculty interactions and the support provided.
    • Developing and implementing faculty support initiatives to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
    • Assisting in the development and facilitation of workshops, training sessions, and professional development opportunities for faculty.
    • Assist with planning and running of ISC collaboration events.
    • Collaborating with faculty and department heads to identify and meet the needs of faculty.
    • Collaborating with other units/divisions, such as Facilities or IT, to ensure comprehensive support for faculty.
    • Collaborating with other ISC staff and the Dean’s Office on implementing ISC initiatives.
    • Contributing to the continuous improvement of faculty support services by providing feedback and suggestions for enhancement.
  • Creating faculty support resources.
    • Developing and distributing guides, checklists, “cheat sheets”, and other documentation that support faculty.
    • Developing content for the learning management system for faculty use or reference.
    • Preparing and presenting information sessions for faculty (workshops, orientation, etc.)
  • Supporting ISC development and growth.
    • Identifying trends in the needs of faculty and issues being encountered.
    • Collaborating with the ISCM and the ISCC to address or mitigate the trends impacting faculty.
    • Implementing, analyzing, and reporting general data collection to determine and/or improve overall academic effectiveness.
    • Assisting with formulating term and annual ISC reports.
    • Proposing initiatives to improve ISC services.
    • Support the ISCM, by coordinating receiving exams from instructors and disbursement to invigilators during the final examination period each term.
      • Co-ordinate with the front desk to get exams delivered to absentee instructors for marking.
    • Performing other duties as assigned by the ISCM or the Dean’s Office.
