Career Advisor

Position Overview

The Career Advisor at Alexander College works within the Student Support Department to support educating students in becoming productive members of society through introducing them to the workforce. Career Advising offers counseling for academic (and non-academic) job searching and major selection, advanced résumé and cover letter writing best practice methods and hiring trends and resources, both via in-person 1:1 appointment and through classroom presentations. Career Advising also encourages and connects students to experiential learning opportunities. Career Advising provides resources and assistance in all aspects of the career development and job search processes.

Full Time, Permanent

Salary Range

From $50,000.00 per year

Working Hours

The Employee will work during regular business hours, Monday to Friday for 37.5 hours per week (not including a 30-minute unpaid meal break per day). Occasional overtime may be required.

Location

The Burnaby and Vancouver Campus. Flexibility to travel between and work at both campuses may be required.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred) or some education at the postsecondary level
  • Certificate in Career Counseling (CCDP, NDCA, etc) from an accredited institution or equivalent level of experience and education
  • Membership in a professional counselling organization
  • Minimum of 1 year work experience in Career Advising / Services, preferably within a post-secondary, international educational setting
  • Ability to interact with corporate recruiters and facilitate their successful recruitment of students.
  • Understanding of industry interview and screening processes and skilled in advising students of industry interview and screening techniques.
  • Knowledge of business functional areas or industries, ability to develop metrics and evaluation systems, and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and services.
  • Knowledge of industry, job market, and trends in order to target industries and clients.

  • Strong ability to take initiative and complete tasks as assigned;
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office;
  • Excellent time-management skills;
  • Can initiate tasks/projects confidently and competently;
  • Strong ability to communicate easily and fluidly through technology and social media;
  • Works well both independently and in high-performance teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership and public speaking abilities

Specific Responsibilities

Assist with Administrative Functions of the Career Advising Unit
  • Attend regular Career Advising Unit meetings
  • Work in conjunction with other staff in the Student Affairs Division and other departments, as necessary; attend regular SA Division meetings
  • Collect and present data for the Director and administration related to term and annual reporting
Provide Career Advising for Alexander College Students
  • Meet and advise students during office hours and as needed, providing:
    • Cover letter / Resume Writing Help
    • How to find job opportunities and using local websites / agencies for job searching
    • Developing LinkedIn and other Social Media profiles
    • Interview practice / mock interviews
    • Reviewing job postings and advise students on identification of transferable skills and their existing competencies
    • Canadian workplace cultural norms and expectations
  • Advertise career services to new students at Orientation, in classrooms and throughout the campus, and through the use of social media, etc.
  • Advise students on the course skill sets for workplace applicability
  • Develop materials for 1:1 career appointments and classroom presentations
  • Assist students to create career plans that best suit their needs
  • Work with Faculty to map Learning Outcomes to Professional Outcomes
  • Participate and present in events such as: Job Fair, Volunteer Fair, and Orientation workshops
  • Collaborate with Internal and External stakeholders, attend BBOT meetings and networking events
  • Grade documents and respond to students enquiries for the Canadian Job Readiness (CJR) program on Canvas
Provide Placement Services and Co-Op Opportunities
  • Work with external agencies / organizations / businesses to develop job placements for students
  • Oversee and initiate Co-Op programming at Alexander College
  • Develop and deliver informational workshops on Co-Op opportunities
  • Work with the Commerce department to develop and formalize Co-Op at Alexander College
Ensure Career Advising supports institutional best practices
  • Work with the Student Support Units Advisors to ensure advising guidelines are relevant
  • Research, monitor and report on current job market trends in post-secondary education in BC
  • As required, liaise with other post-secondary institutions in BC to hone best practices, learn of alternatives and other opportunities for students
  • Prepare and deliver reports to Director(s) including relevant data regarding advising
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director(s)
Other
  • Invigilate course examinations while showing reasonable flexibility with respect to scheduling during each semester’s examination period
