WLC Student Worker and Spanish Tutor

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The WLC Student Worker will provide in-person support for the Writing & Learning Centre (WLC) as a first point of contact for visitors. They will answer questions and guide students that come to the WLC for help. They will also assist WLC staff with general management of the centre. They will also provide in-person tutoring for students enrolled in Spanish classes at Alexander College.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to the WLC Manager and WLC Officer

EMPLOYMENT TYPE:

Temporary, Part-Time

WORK WEEK:

This position requires 10-15 hours per week with availability on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

COMPENSATION:

$17.85 per hour

LOCATION:

Alexander College, Burnaby Campus

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

International students are welcome to apply for this on-campus position. In accordance with Citizen and Immigration Canada, students who want to work on-campus do not need a work permit, but do need to meet these basic requirements:

  • Current enrollment in at least the second term of full-time studies at Alexander College
  • Have a valid study permit for the entirety of the current term
  • Maintain at least 80% attendance in all courses
  • Fluent in English speaking and writing
  • Fluent in Spanish speaking and writing
  • Preference is given to those who have experience in customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with the services offered by Alexander College’s Writing & Learning Centre
  • Ability to give instructions and communicate information clearly
  • Positive attitude and outgoing personality
  • Strong computer skills (web-based programs, including Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to complete a task with minimal supervision

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Answering general questions for visitors to the Writing & Learning Centre
  • Assisting students with booking appointments, creating accounts, and signing up for workshops
  • General office duties (printing, organizing supplies, passing along messages)
  • Referring students to other departments for questions not related to the WLC
  • Crowd and line management during busy periods
  • Helping promote the Writing & Learning Centre at events during working hours
  • Tutoring students enrolled in SPAN 100 classes
  • Coordinating with the Spanish instructors to provide help with assignments and course content
  • Doing introductions and offering services to students in Spanish classes
