Today we shine our Alumni Spotlight on Stanway Cen, an Alexander College alumnus originally from Vancouver, BC. Stanway studied computer science at Alexander College and is currently pursuing a Mathematics and its Application Specialist degree at the University of Toronto, with ambitions of minoring in Data Science and building a career in mathematics or data analytics within the tech industry.
Choosing Alexander College was a strategic and cost-effective step for Stanway, allowing him to earn transferable credits efficiently. He highlights the smaller class sizes at Alexander College, which facilitated stronger, more personal connections with his professors. This close interaction significantly helped him engage more deeply with the course material.
Stanway particularly enjoyed Alexander College’s welcoming atmosphere, describing the campus as a comfortable second home due to its central location. He fondly recalls Professor Luc Lapierre, whose discrete mathematics course and approachable teaching style greatly enhanced Stanway’s understanding of complex mathematical concepts.
As an outdoors enthusiast, Stanway also appreciates Vancouver’s proximity to mountains, providing endless recreational opportunities each week.
Reflecting on his transfer experience, Stanway praises Alexander College for making the process smooth and accessible. He notes the valuable assistance provided by college staff and the clear guidelines that streamlined his transition to a larger university setting. Stanway emphasizes that Alexander College served as an ideal transition point, offering the experience of a university environment without the immediate pressures of a large-scale institution.
Stanway’s advice for future students is to embrace this transitional period without unnecessary stress. He encourages students to use their time at Alexander College to explore their interests and prepare themselves mentally and academically for the exciting journey ahead.
