History of Halloween
Halloween is largely celebrated in Europe and North America on October 31st and is mostly a non-religious holiday despite its history. Halloween can be dated back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where Celts believed that on one night of the year the world between the living and the dead became blurred. On that night, October 31st, the Celts celebrated Samhain because they believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth on that day. However, over time, Halloween has “evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats” (History.com Editors, 2021).
