The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a Canadian holiday that was first established in 2013, when it was known as Orange Shirt Day. This holiday is meant to bring awareness of the tragic legacy of the Canadian residential school system, the consequences of which still impacts Indigenous communities to this day.
As an institution for learning, Alexander College is hosting events that promote Indigenous culture and history. Join us on September 27 and 28 where we learn how to make a traditional Indigenous dish, watch a movie co-directed and starring an Indigenous filmmaker, and host a presentation about the history of residential schools in Canada.
Alexander College acknowledges that the land on which we usually gather is the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work in this territory.
