University Transfer Fair Recap (November 2024)

Written by Alexander College in School News on November 12, 2024

Thank you to everyone who attended our annual University Transfer Fair! We would also like to extend a thank you to the staff and university representative that made this event possible.

University Transfer is a one of the main benefits of studying at Alexander College and obtaining an Associate Degree.

With our fully transferrable courses through the BCCAT system, you can transfer to universities across BC as well as universities across Canada.

University Transfer Fairs allow students to explore their options and talk to different university representatives all in one place.

This year, we welcomed universities such as Simon Fraser University (SFU), University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Sauder School of Business, Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), University of Calgary (U of C), and more!

Q. Which university are you looking to transfer to and why?

Out of the students we interviewed, many listed UBC as one of the universities they wanted to transfer to, with one of the reasons being that it was known for being one of the best universities in BC and even Canada.

Other schools that were named included SFU, British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), Capilano University (CapU), and University of Victoria (UVic) for various reasons including the quality of their campus, and friends.

In the case of BCIT, having a reputation for applied learning was the reason the student we interviewed wanted to transfer to that school.

Q. What is the most important thing you look for when choosing a university to transfer to?

The responses to this question were a lot more varied as many students had differing priorities when looking for universities. Notably, some cited reputation as a factor while others wanted to attend a university that has a good campus environment.

One student stated that they look at what co-op programs are offered when deciding which school they want to transfer to.

Advice from Representatives

“Take the effort, do your research, and then don’t be afraid of reaching out for help when you need it!”

In addition, we asked various representatives for advice that they would give students looking to transfer to university and this is what they responded with:

  • Check the BC Transfer Guide: Double check what your courses transfer into using the BC Transfer Guide because sometimes courses won’t transfer in the way you think it will!
  • Talk to an Academic Advisor: Aside from checking the BC Transfer Guide, you can also talk to one of our Academic Advisors who specialize in making sure you are taking the required classes that will transfer into the university program of your choice.
  • Be prepared: Some schools, such as BCIT, have intense course loads so it’s always a good idea to check and be prepared!

Transferring to a university from an Associate Degree is an excellent way to explore your interests before committing to a four-year program. University Transfer fairs allow students to ask questions and compare programs offered by different schools.

If you are interested in University Transfer events or if you need help with transferring to a university, make an appointment with one of our Academic Advisors and they will be more than happy to help!
