Frequently Asked Questions

A micro-credential is a short course that helps you earn one clear skill, or a small group of skills. It is focused, practical, and linked to skills that are in-demand in the workplace.

A micro-credential helps you learn specific skills quickly, update your skills to meet changing industry needs, stand out from other job applicants, add new skills to your current knowledge, and/or feel a sense of personal achievement. Because micro-credentials are linked to the job market, they can help you show employers that you have the skills they are looking for, or help you stand out in your current position.

Certificates, diplomas, and degrees are longer programs covering more topics and usually take months or years to complete. A micro-credential covers a small, focused set of skills and requires only a short time to finish. Sometimes micro-credentials can be combined, or stacked, to show a broader group of skills.

Yes. Micro-credentials are developed with the specific skills employers need in mind. They allow employers—and potential employers—to verify the skills required for you to succeed.

Most micro-credentials at Alexander College last between 4–6 weeks and require a few hours each week to complete.

Micro-credentials may be delivered online with set class times, hybrid with some online and some in-person components, or fully in-person. Please check the details for the micro-credential you are interested in to confirm how it will be delivered.

Micro-credentials are competency-based, so you must both learn and demonstrate the required skills. Assessment may include an applied project, case study, practical task, presentation, portfolio, quizzes, or short exams.

Sometimes micro-credentials can be stacked for credit. At this time, Alexander College does not offer micro-credentials that lead to academic credit, but this may change in the future.

Rules and regulations around study permits and Post-Graduation Work Permits frequently change. We recommend connecting with a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant or one of our Regulated International Student Immigration Advisors (RISIAs) at risia@alexandercollege.ca.

You will receive a certificate of recognition that can be verified by employers and included on your résumé.

Micro-credentials are offered through the Alexander College Extended Learning department. You can view the Extended Learning refund policy HERE. Please note that general student policies do not apply to Extended Learning and/or micro-credential learners.

Micro-credentials are designed to meet current industry needs. In fast-changing fields, skills—and therefore micro-credentials—may become outdated. Check your micro-credential details to confirm whether an expiration date applies.
