An Academic Alert is filed when instructors suspect a case of plagiarism or cheating. At Alexander College, there are two types of Academic Alerts. A Type I Academic Alert is filed in cases of intentional plagiarism or cheating, where the student knowingly violates Academic Integrity rules to gain an academic advantage. A Type II Academic Alert is filed in cases of unintentional plagiarism, where the student breaches Academic Integrity guidelines without intending to gain an advantage — such as forgetting to cite information or not fully understanding citation rules.
Before filing an Academic Alert, instructors may choose to meet with the student to discuss the evidence and clarify any misunderstandings. Once a decision is made to proceed, instructors will inform the student and submit the Academic Alert form, along with supporting evidence, to Student Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) for further review.
Alexander College acknowledges that the land on which we usually gather is the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work in this territory.
