At Alexander College, students may need to use APA, CMS, and MLA citation styles for their assignments and exams. Using citations is important because it helps students give appropriate credit, improves academic and personal skills, and allows students to maintain Academic Integrity.
The WLC offers a variety of resources that help students learn and use citations properly.
The WLC has created guides to help students learn the basics of citations and paper formatting. Download the latest versions below and become familiar with their contents to help you in writing assignments. If you are unsure which style you need to use, check with your instructor.
If you need further help, book an appointment with an Academic Writing Specialist at the WLC through WCOnline or join our Citations Skills Course on Canvas.
Here are sample papers to demonstrate what correct citations look like in an academic paper. Please note that these papers are only guides; they are not templates that you should follow when writing your papers.
For some courses at Alexander College, students may have to complete the Citations Skills Course for APA, CMS, or MLA citation styles. The Citation Skills Course is on Canvas and teaches the basics of citations. It can be completed by attending an in-person Workshop OR self-studying and passing an Exit Quiz. Learn how to enroll in the Citations Skills Course on Canvas by watching this video.
After enrolling, read the Home page and then do the Academic Integrity Quiz. Once completed, you can decide if you’d like to do the Exit Quiz OR take the Workshop.
The Workshops and Exit Quizzes are only available at the beginning of the term and must be completed before the deadline posted on the Home page of the course.
Your instructor may ask you to complete the Citation Skills Course in APA, CMS, or MLA style. You only need to do the style that your instructor asks – not all three!
Even if it is not required by your instructor, we recommend checking out the Citation Skills Course, as learning how to properly cite for assignments and exams can help you avoid getting in trouble for plagiarism.
