Today we shine our Student Spotlight on Su Yi Lin Htet, also known as Susan, our student from Myanmar! Susan is currently enroled in the University Transfer program with plans to transfer to the University of British Columbia (UBC) for economics and commerce upon graduation.
One thing Susuan loves about studying in Vancouver is the diversity. Not only is the student body diverse, giving her the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, but also the food is diverse. Along with making friends, she can also discover cuisine from different countries.
Academically, Susuan is grateful for all the student support services available to her. Notably, Academic Advising was able to help her plan for university transfer and advise her on which courses were required as well as the GPA requirements. In addition to grades, they also recommended extracurricular activities to round out her future application. Fortunately, Alexander College has many student-led clubs such as the Japanese club and dance club.
One of her favorite memories of Alexander College so far is her trip to Cypress Mountain where she experienced snowshoeing for the very first time with her friends.
One piece of advice Susan would like to give to new students wanting to study in Canada is to improve their English skills and don’t give up.
“Life can be hard sometimes,” Susan says, “and you might not know what path to choose and what to do next. Even if you’re struggling, don’t give up and just keep going.”
Alexander College acknowledges that the land on which we usually gather is the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work in this territory.
