Academic Writing Specialist

Position Overview

The Academic Writing Specialist will provide academic writing and academic skills support to students for a variety of subjects at the College. This will include helping students improve their writing and running workshops. The Academic Writing Specialist will also collaborate with the team on creating and improving academic resources for students.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to the Writing & Learning Centre (WLC) Manager and the Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences

Employment Type

Full-time, Temporary, until December 21st, 2026

Hourly Wage

$24.53 per hour

Term

Spring 2026 term

Work Week

The employee will work a flexible 37.5-hour work week (not including a 30-minute unpaid meal break per day). Typical hours will be held during regular business hours, from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. However, starting in the Fall term, regular evening hours will be required.

Location

This position is primarily located at our Burnaby Campus with travel to the Vancouver Campus as necessary for support and administrative duties. Starting in the Fall, the primary location is the Vancouver Campus.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or in progress in a relevant subject, preferably from a BC post-secondary institution
  • Minimum of one year of work experience in an educational setting
  • Fluent in spoken and written English; experience working with non-native English speakers preferred

  • Proficient with all Microsoft Office programs and applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, etc.)

Specific Responsibilities

  • Providing tutoring support for students regarding essays, citations, writing assignments, projects, and study skills in a small group setting or on an individual basis, in person or online.
    • Appointments may be scheduled outside regular business hours (Monday – Friday from 8:30am-5:00pm) with evening and weekends as required. Reasonable flexibility is expected during certain periods of a semester
    • Timely filing student post-appointment reports using the College’s online scheduling system.
  • Conducting academic skills workshops and computer literacy workshops in person or online; timely marking and filing of reports and workshop materials.
  • Assisting with research and development of new workshops for a micro-credentials program.
  • Promoting academic integrity in the college and referring students to support services available to them.
  • Providing writing support to students through WriteAway
  • Being an integral part of the Writing & Learning Centre by creating writing and academic skills resources and participating in efforts to promote the Writing and Learning Centre.
  • Invigilating course examinations while showing reasonable flexibility with respect to scheduling during each semester’s examination period
  • Participating in college events such as New Student Orientation and Convocation
  • Other duties as assigned by the WLC Manager and WLC Officer, including but not limited to creating new workshops/resources and printing worksheets/guides
