Post-secondary education is an exciting and important chapter of any student’s academic journey but it can also be a source of stress, especially if you are an international student.
This is why Alexander College has a Health and Wellness department as part of our Student Support Services so students are able to discuss any issues they have with a Registered Clinical Counselor.
Students are eligible for up to 10 free counseling sessions per calendar year. These confidential sessions can be in-person or virtual so students can choose which meeting method is most comfortable for them.
Aside from counseling sessions, our Health and Wellness department also helps students in the following ways:
As an international student, it is perfectly normal to be feeling some level of stress, anxiety, or other feelings. Knowing how to manage your mental health is an important part of your academy journey and our Health and Wellness Counselors are more than happy to help.
Health and Wellness Counselor Muge notes that common stressors include academics, motivation, concentration and other factors related to effectively living on their own. Managing relationships may also be a challenge due to the long distance.
The Health and Wellness department maintains a list of self help resources for multiple topics.
Relaxation techniques are a great tool to have when you’re feeling overwhelmed. There are also grounding techniques that use your five senses to take your mind off stress.
These techniques take under 15 minutes to complete and work better with practice.
For those who are unsure about booking a one-on-one appointment with one of our counselors, Health and Wellness hosts regularly occurring workshops on campus covering a variety of mental health topics including stress management, text anxiety, and emotional regulation.
Here2Talk is a free counseling app that students can use to connect to a clinical counselor. Your personal information will not be shared with Alexander College and you will still have access to counseling services at Alexander College.
In addition, Here2Talk lets you connect to counselors who speak a variety of languages, allowing you to talk about any problems you may have in your native language.
Managing your mental health is just as important as managing your physical health. You can book an appointment with a Health and Wellness Counselor through Jane App or by emailing Health and Wellness at healthandwellness@alexandercollege.ca
