Communication Beginnings is a textbook designed for English language learners in an academic English program. It is composed of 7 chapters, each of which covers specific speaking and listening learning objectives and includes dialogues, interviews, discussions and conversation activities.

In the Community: An Intermediate Integrated Skills Textbook by NorQuest College

In the Community is an English language skills textbook to help English Language Learning students acquire communication skills needed to communicate with those around them. It focuses on listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Business English for Success by Scott McLean

Business English for Success provides instruction on building writing, reading, and critical thinking, and combines comprehensive grammar review with an introduction to paragraph writing and composition. It focuses on clear oral and written communication in the workplace.

College Skills: Intermediate English by Tania Pattison

College Skills is a textbook designed to help students develop skills in reading, writing, language use, and studying. Within each chapter, students encounter two reading passages; these are followed by questions designed to improve comprehension skills, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills.

Purdue University Writing Lab

Purdue provides ESL-specific exercises, as well as grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence style and structure, and writing resources.

UVic’s English Language Center (ELC)

The ELC is a free site of English language lessons and practice exercises. The site is designed for adult English learners and contains resources for students of different levels.

The Canadian Encyclopedia

The Canadian Encyclopedia provides Canadians and others with accurate, updated information about Canada’s people and country.

Canadian Immigrant

Canadian Immigrant is a free online magazine made to “inform, educate and motivate” immigrants to Canada and assist them in their immigration journey.

Westcoast Reader

The Westcoast Reader is a magazine created to help English language learners develop reading and language skills through newsworthy articles about living in British Columbia and Canada. It also serves as an introduction to Canadian daily newspapers.

Learning English with CBC

CBC provides free English lessons through weekly newscasts and monthly stories to help students learn about their community and workplace.

BBC Learning English

BBC’s Learning English website provides free news articles, videos, courses, and exercises all made for English language learners. Click here for access.

AC Library Books

AC Library has a wide range of books written for students learning English. These books are categorized by reading level. Please visit either campus and ask a Librarian to help you find our English-language reader’s and to explain the reading levels.

Writing Help at Alexander College

AC’s Writing and Learning Center provides EAP students with resources designed to help students start their essays. Please note that the WLC also provides one-on-one tutoring for all courses offered at the College and personalized feedback on written assignments through WriteAway.
