At Alexander College, we are committed to supporting students who face barriers or have a disability, whether medical, physical, or cognitive, that may affect their academic success. The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities work with students, faculty, and staff to implement accommodations that help students engage fully in their courses while upholding academic standards. All student information is kept confidential, and we ensure you are connected with the resources and supports needed to succeed in your studies.

Eligibility

Students may apply for accommodations if they have a documented barrier that affects their learning or participation in their courses. This may include:

  • Physical or mobility impairments
  • Mental health or psychological concerns
  • Cognitive, learning, or attention-related conditions
  • Pregnancy

Please note, accommodations are not intended to reduce academic expectations but to provide equitable access. Students are expected to remain actively engaged in their studies and attend classes as much as their circumstances allow.

How to apply

  • Complete the Accommodation Form.
  • Gather supporting medical documentation (see requirements below).
  • Submit the form and documentation to The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities at srr@alexandercollege.ca

Documentation Requirements:

Documentation must:

  • Be provided by a licensed professional (e.g., physician, physiatrist, social worker, occupational therapist).
  • Clearly describe the functional limitations affecting academic performance (e.g., focus, mobility, exam-writing ability).
  • Include recommendations for how the College can best support your needs (e.g., private space to write exams, reduced attendance requirements (minimum of 50%), extensions for assignments, extra writing time for exams, etc.)

Examples of acceptable documentation:

  • Medical report or specialist letter outlining your diagnosis
  • Psychological or psychoeducational assessment
  • Confirmation of pregnancy and/or birth certificate for the child. If your due date falls in the middle of the term, we encourage you to apply for authorized leave (refer to Authorized Leave from Studies).

Please note, the documentation must describe the symptoms and levels of impairment you presently experience, if this information is needed to curate your accommodation plan.

Examples of Accommodations offered by Alexander College include but are in no way limited to:

  • Providing a note taker in class; (this can be provided to students only if they have a physical disability where they are unable to write their own notes)
  • Allowing for extra time on exams, tests and quizzes;
  • Offering 1:1 tutoring services;
  • Ensuring exemption from formal attendance requirements / tardiness;
  • Providing a separate, isolated location for the purpose of examination.
  • Supplying adaptive furniture or equipment (e.g., specialized desks, seating supports).

FAQ

You don’t need to reapply every term if your condition is long-term. You may be asked for updated documentation if your accommodations need to be adjusted. If your condition is temporary (i.e., recovering from a car accident), then you need to reapply.

No. Accommodations are not retroactive. They apply only to future coursework once approved.

You may submit updated documentation at any time. Accommodations can be adjusted as needed. Please email srr@alexandercollege.ca for more information.

All documentation is confidential. Only staff in the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities will review it. Instructors are informed only of the approved accommodations, not the diagnosis or medical details.

Please email srr@alexandercollege.ca with an overview of your situation. Our unit will review your information and discuss possible supports.
