Not everyone is the same in terms of their abilities, and sometimes in order for a student to be successful in a course, a student will need some help to meet the basic expectations of the class. If you are coming to the College with some kind of a barrier or disability, whether this is medical, physical or cognitive, The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities coordinates with yourself, the staff and faculty to make sure that you can do well in your classes. We don’t share your personal information, but we do find means of connecting you to the resources you need to be successful in your studies.

Students who receive positive COVID-19 results should self-report (via staff, faculty, or directly) to The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

A Student Rights and Responsibilities Officer, after having received a student’s positive test result, will notify the infected student and their instructors about the support services that are available to the student during these challenging times. A short-term accommodation plan will be created that is meant to help the student to not fall behind with their studies. Support services will be available in the form of assignment / quiz / exam deferral and attendance waiver for 10 calendar days following the receipt of the positive test results.

If a student experiences long-term effects of COVID-19 beyond the aforementioned time frame, the student will be advised to consult their doctor for recommendations for a long-term accommodation plan.

To self-report or for questions please contact srr@alexandercollege.ca

Important: Intentionally false claims of COVID-19 are met with behavioural misconduct measures AND a zero on any assignment that a student attempted to receive privileges for.

Examples of Accommodations offered by Alexander College include but are in no way limited to:

  • Providing a note taker in class; (this can be provided to students only if they have a physical disability where they are unable to write their own notes)
  • Allowing for extra time on exams, tests and quizzes;
  • Offering 1:1 tutoring services;
  • Ensuring exemption from formal attendance requirements / tardiness;
  • Providing a separate, isolated location for the purpose of examination.

Examples of acceptable evidence to attach when applying for academic accommodations:

  • Medical Report;
  • Confirmation of pregnancy and/or Birth certificate for the child. If your due date falls in the middle of the term, we encourage you to apply for authorized leave (refer to Authorized Leave from Studies).

Please note, the documentation must describe the symptoms and levels of impairment you presently experience, if this information is needed to curate your accommodation plan.

The official college policy on Accommodations is:

“Students who have a disability or medical/psychological concern (e.g., a chronic illness) that may affect their attendance or participation in class must establish their need for accommodation with the the The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities by the end of the third week of the term. Late accommodation requests will be considered.

Each student applying for accommodation will be considered individually, on a case-by-case basis, with respect and confidentiality. Instructors will make provisions as mutually agreed upon by themselves and the student.”
