Alexander College is more than just an academic institution, it is a community of staff, faculty, and students. As a community initiative, the Colour Your Campus project sought to encourage participation, creativity, and collaboration among the members of the community.
Over the course of three sessions in March, participants were encouraged to pick up a small canvas and, with the supplies provided, create a mini work of art. These paintings will eventually be placed together to form a collective mural at the AC campuses.
This project was created by Lindsay Simpson, one of our Sociology instructors. Inspired by her time at the University of New Brunswick and by the Faculty of Education Community Murals at Simon Fraser University (SFU), she wanted to bring something similar to Alexander College.
“The project goal is simple: offer a low-barrier way for the AC community to express their artistic side and have some fun. Students, staff, and faculty created their own small canvas painting, which will be used to create a collective mural. What is great about this project is that individual creativity can shine alongside the unity and togetherness that the final artwork symbolizes.”
Alexander College acknowledges that the land on which we usually gather is the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work in this territory.
