Student Housing Services: Student Rentals, Homestay, Housing Advice, and More

Written by Alexander College in About AC on September 10, 2024

As an international student in Canada, housing is a big question you have to answer. Finding a good place to stay can bring security and peace of mind while you complete your studies.

At Alexander College, we offer Student Housing Services so you can discover housing options that work for you. Our page also has a section on things to consider when looking for a place to stay.

This blog will go over some of the housing options available to you as well as some advice from our Student Housing Officer, Leo!

Housing Options

Student Housing Services helps students smoothly transition from their home country to life in Canada by providing resources and assistance as well as answering any questions they may have about the local housing market.

As an Alexander College student, you may be able to receive some discounts and benefits for the following options through our trusted providers:

Student Accommodations

Student accommodations are rental units that are specifically rented out to students. Our department recommends GEC Living which provides fully furnished apartments and full utilities.

As Vancouver’s largest off-campus student housing provider, GEC Living has student residences located close to public transportation so you can easily transit to school.

Homestay

Homestay provides the unique opportunity to live with a local family. For those seeking a more immersive cultural experience, homestay is a great option.

Living with a host family may also reduce feelings of homesickness by providing a supportive environment.

Our department recommends Vanmates Accommodation and Travel and Learn Interchange as two reputable homestay resources.

Advice for Students

Student Housing Officer Leo recommends setting a realistic budget and also consider your proximity to stores and services such as supermarkets and public transportation.

It’s also important to be cautious of rental scams.

If you are looking for housing options on your own, make sure to verify the listing and the landlord before making any payments.

One last piece of advice for students is to start looking early. Leo recommends looking for housing options as soon as your visa is approved.
