What is Academic Dishonesty?

Academic Dishonesty that subjects students to disciplinary measures includes, but is not limited to, engaging in, attempting to engage in, or assisting others to engage in any of the actions described below:

  • Plagiarism
    • Plagiarism occurs when an individual submits or presents the work of another person as their own. Examples of plagiarism include, but are not limited to:
      • Using another person’s words, ideas, theories, charts, photographs, etc. without providing citations.
      • Using any statistics, facts, opinions, research, etc. without providing citations.
      • Incorrectly quoting another person’s words and ideas.
      • Incorrectly paraphrasing another person’s words and ideas.
      • Changing data or research or in any way misrepresenting research.
      • Failure to properly use in-text citations, references, and citation styles.
      • Submitting any work that was done by another person (e.g., contract cheating, papermills, copying and pasting, unethical tutoring, etc.)
      • Re-submitting the same essay, presentation, or assignment done previously or for another course (i.e., self-plagiarism).
  • Cheating
    • Failure to comply with Alexander College Exam Rules.
    • Failure to comply with instructors’ specific Exam Rules.
    • Impersonating a candidate during an examination or other academic evaluations.
  • Falsifying records, documents, or information

Disciplinary measures that may be imposed, individually or in combination, for Academic Misconduct include:

  • A letter of reprimand.
  • Notation of discipline on the student’s record.
  • A failing grade or mark of zero in the course.
  • Cancellation of any scholarships, bursaries, or prizes.
  • Suspension from the College for a specified or indefinite period of time.
  • Revocation of a degree or other academic credentials dishonestly or improperly obtained.
  • Expulsion from the College.

Questions regarding these matters may be directed to the student’s Instructor, the Writing & Learning Centre, Student Rights and Responsibilities, or the Office of the Registrar.
